REPUTATION – keep argument to mind aa you track through
essay unsustainable how it is shown all the way through

Stevenson uses the theme of Reputation to criticise the high expectations in a
Victorian society. It is clear from the start that the characters in the novella
hold their reputation dear to them and fear for it being tarnished. Stevenson
suggests how reputation and the tension between appearing perfect but
pursuing things that are unacceptable leads to secrecy in the lives of many Vic
gentleman feeling oppressed by the moral expectations. In this novella, Jekyll
trying to keep a too perfect reputation leads to greater evil and his total
destruction
Introduction quotes
Already starts with a secret- Jekyll and the door
“austere with himself”
The use of the word “austere” has connotations of rigidity and his self-imposed
control over his desires as although he thoroughly enjoyed theatre “he had not
crossed the doors of one for more than twenty years” emphasizing that
Stevenson establishes the importance of reputation and how Utterson must
repress his pleasures to avoid any potential moral compromise.
“drank gin when he when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages” The
verb “mortify” suggests structure of vic. society is harsh due to people’s fears
of acknowledging a duplicitous nature.

“I feel strongly about putting questions”
“I am ashamed of my long tongue”

This suggests although Utterson’s being such a picture of propriety, he is
inquisitive and has a curious nature but represses his curiosity for the sake of
society as a gentleman should not express too much emotion to uphold ones
reputation. Stevenson demonstrates that it is impossible to repress human

,nature as he uses Utterson who is the epitome of a gentleman to show even
those who are considered perfect cannot keep their desires repressed.

“well made…with something of a slyish cast”
Questions the nature of man

“Dr Jekyll grew pale to the very lips and there became a blackness about his
eyes”
JEKYLL secrecy and how he develops this

Developed
“If it came to a trial your name might appear”
“I am thinking of my own character, which this hateful business has rather
exposed”

“Much of his past was unearthed...and all disputable”
“came out of seclusion/evil influence has been withdrawn”

Final impressions- Jekyll is the key image of being repressed by reputation +
struggles
“I would say nothing of this paper”
"We may at least save his credit"
“We may yet involve your master in some dire catastrophe”
"I concealed my pleasures"
"Men have hired bravos to transact their crimes while their own person and
reputation sat under a shelter”

"my pleasures were...undignified"
"sea of liberty"

, FRIENDSHIP AND LOYALTY
Friendship is central and serves as a protective element to their own
reputation. The theme of friendship is closely tied to the Gentleman’s code
where gentleman were expected to protect one another against outside
influences particularly with regard to reputation. Stevenson shows through
different friendships in the novella how it can

Para 1: Utterson and Enfield – almost gossip with each other- go on walks
Utterson says “I incline to Cain’s heresy”
“the last reputable acquaintance in the lives of down-going men”
“put the greatest store by these excursions” “chief jewel of each week”

Para 2 :Utterson and Jekyll
Utterson is Jekyll’s biggest victim- close (will tries to give him advice)
relationship becomes quite difficult
“This document had become the doctors eyesore”
“If he be Mr Hyde, I shall be Mr Seek”
“my mind misgives me he is in deep waters!”
“A great curiosity...to disregard prohibition and dive at once to the bottom of
these mysteries” yet Utterson restrains himself
“fell off little by little in the frequency of his visits”
“if not of your consent then by brute force”
“I would say nothing of this paper”
Reputation
Shows Utterson upholds friendship over own morality protecting his
reputation -doesn’t go straight to the police friendship ia central in this world

Para 3: Jekyll and Lanyon – friendship is compromised Lanyon being good
doctor breaks off with Jekyll

Henry Jekyll became too fanciful for me”
“began to go wrong in the mind”
“unscientific balderdash”
“deep seated terror of the mind”
“Lanyon’s faced changed and he held out a trembling hand. I am quite done
with that person “
