,Utterson being the narrator, initially he is presented as a trustworthy lawyer, yet as
the novel continues, the reader begins to doubt him as he slowly turns into an
unreliable narrator. Through his complete austerity, he suppresses his desires to find
out more, failing to fulfil the detective position he assumed, through both this and the
novel only revealing the secrets in the last two chapters of letters, it physically
enacts the repression it's describing, aligning the reader with Victorian society.

The novel being in epistolary form and ending with two letters which reveal
everything is extremely poignant as it allows stevenson to argue that the repression
within Victorian society only allows secrets to emerge posthumously, and shows the
suppression of truth as continuing throughout their entire lives. This is reinforced by
the novella starting with the story of the door and ending with utterson breaking the
door down, as it shows the repression fading.

Duality is structurally embedded into the novel due to it being both a gothic and
detective novel, as stevenson employs both genres successfully to emphasize the
duality in everything. Through the detective aspect, we see utterson trying to logically
and rationally discover Hyde and find out the answer to his existence, however
combining it with the gothic genre shows the horror and fear they cant escape, as
hydes evil resists rational categorisation. Furthermore the use of the gothic is
extremely poignant as normally gothic novels would have an external monster,
however here, it is internal and cant be properly defeated, as stevenson subverts
traditional gothic convention to expose the innate evi latent within victorian society.
Detective novel advertises rational thoughts and discovery, gothic resists this,
embodying jekyll a man who believes he can control something gothic and unknown

Hyde appears before jekyll, showing his dominance over jekyll and how the existence
of evil has always been there, victorian society simply put a facade over it, however it
can easily re-emerge
