How To Use This Book
This book is built around one idea: IELTS Writing and Speaking are not tests of raw English ability — they are tests
of exam technique applied to a known, limited set of question types. Once you know the structures, the language
banks, and what examiners are actually scoring against, your job becomes execution, not invention.
Work through it in this order for the fastest results:
1. Read Chapter 1 to understand exactly how you are scored — this changes how you write from day one.
2. Master the Writing Task 1 and Task 2 structures in Chapters 2–4 and copy the model answers by hand at least
once — physically writing them builds muscle memory for the phrasing.
3. Build your personal language bank from Chapter 9 as you go — highlight ten phrases per topic and reuse
them in practice essays.
4. Move to Speaking (Chapters 6–8) once your writing structures feel automatic — the same linking language
transfers directly.
5. Follow the 30-Day Study Plan in Chapter 10 in the final month before your test date.
"Band 9 is not about big words. It is about full, accurate, well-linked answers to the exact question asked —
every single time."

Chapter 1 — How IELTS Actually Scores You
Before you write a single sentence, you need to understand the four criteria examiners use. Every essay, letter, and
speaking answer is graded against these — nothing else matters for your score.
Figure 1.1 — Writing and Speaking are scored on four equally-weighted criteria.
The Four Criteria (Writing)
Criterion What It Really Means
Task Achievement / Response Did you answer the exact question asked, with a clear
position and fully developed ideas? (Task 1: did you
describe the data accurately and cover all key
features?)
Coherence & Cohesion Does your writing flow logically with clear
paragraphing, and did you link ideas naturally — not
just with 'firstly, secondly, moreover'?
Lexical Resource Vocabulary range, accuracy, and natural collocations
— not showing off rare words incorrectly.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy A mix of simple and complex sentences, used
correctly, with few errors.
Each criterion is worth 25% of your Writing score. This is the single most important fact in this book: you cannot
score Band 8 in Task Achievement with brilliant grammar if you never answered the question. Examiners are
trained to penalize off-topic or partial answers heavily, regardless of language quality.
