COMMUNICATION EXAM SCRIPT SOLVED
QUESTIONS AND CORRECT ANSWERS
GRADED A+

◉ What is Shelly Kagan's thesis? Answer: God is not necessary for an
objective morality

◉ How does Kagan support his conclusion? In particular, pay
attention to what he says about the need or lack of need for God as a
lawgiver/require, and also his comments about a social contract, a
'veil of ignorance,' etc. Answer: Reason shows morality because if
everyone had a "veil of ignorance," the laws put in place will be
agreed and truly good. No commander is needed, the moral
community creates laws and holds each other accountable

◉ What is William Lane Craig's thesis? Answer: God is necessary for
an objective morality

◉ How does Craig support his conclusion? Be sure to note his 3
major points Answer: 1. moral values aren't as objective w/o God;
God is the measurement of good, otherwise moral well-being is just a
biological trait caused by evolution

, 2. moral values vs moral duties (good value is not obligated to do
what is right ex. doctors), w/o God there is no commander of the 10
commandments
3. there is no moral accountability w/o God. Moral actions have
eternal effects. Otherwise why be moral if there is no God (or heaven
or hell)?

◉ Does the Socratic Method usually end with or without the
definition or answer being sought? Answer: 1. goes to self-proclaimed
expert
2. asks them questions about what they know
3. the "expert" realizes that they don't actually know
4. there is no definitive answer

◉ What is the main ethical dilemma that arises from Plato's
Euthyphro? (What is the "Euthyphro Problem," the challenge for
theists?) Answer: Is it pious because Gods love it or do Gods love it
because its pious. (A) God commands it because it is already good or
(B) is whatever God commands good? Problems from option A is that
things are good on its own (God is not Good, only good). Problems
from option B is that anything can be justified as good because God
commands it (like the Holocaust)

◉ In Christian Ethics, how is salvation achieved? (i.e., is it earned
through moral and ethical behavior, or some other way?) Answer: it is
not possible to be good enough to reach heaven; God gifted us with
salvation through Jesus, causing gratitude which will cause us to want
to please God by "paying it forward"
