The ethical standards that apply to information security in the TechFite case study are the
principles of confidentiality, integrity, and accountability. The company should follow the Code
of Ethics for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) where the CISSP
has the responsibility of ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of client data. These ethical
standards were not followed by TechFite’s Applications Division as it did not protect information
from Orange Leaf Software LLC and Union City Electronic Ventures. In addition, the unethical
release of client data to competitors violates the code of conduct on confidentiality and results in
loss of trust and legal consequences.
a. Justify your reasoning
Confidentiality is paramount in cybersecurity to ensure that information that is sensitive
is not accessed by unauthorized personnel. In this case, the TechFite’s Applications Division
failed to implement the DLP and adequate internal controls, which led to the misuse of
proprietary data. Such a lack of control is evidence of ethical norms and legal requirements not
being met. Furthermore, the increase in privilege and the lack of segregation of duties within the
Business Intelligence Unit raised serious ethical concerns for the company’s operations (Macnish
& van der Ham, 2020).The principles of least privilege and accountability should have been
strictly observed to avoid misuse and unauthorized access to sensitive information.
