ENG1503 Assignment 1 Semester 2 MEMO | Due 17 August 2026. ALL 5 QUESTIONS ANSWERED. Skills shortages are holding back businesses in South Africa Running a business in South Africa has become increasingly difficult. The challenges range from the economic after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic to limited access to finance, increased global competition, shifting trade relations, technological change and governance issues. As researchers with an interest in urban economies, we set out to understand the biggest challenges facing businesses wanting to grow in South Africa’s Western Cape province. The study involved surveying 426 businesses to draw on the views of employers directly.

1. In 150 words, summarise the THREE main points of the text, demonstrating your
understanding of the key issues and findings.

According to Magidi and Chivige (2026), skills shortages represent the most significant constraint
facing businesses in South Africa's Western Cape province. The first main point is that businesses
struggle to find workers with appropriate digital, soft, and environmental sustainability skills, with
over 70% of surveyed employers reporting difficulties in recruiting suitably skilled staff (Magidi &
Chivige, 2026).

The education and vocational training systems are failing to adequately prepare young people for the
workplace, as evidenced by 58% of employers stating that secondary education only partially meets
economic needs and 62% rating vocational training quality as poor (ENG1503, 501. Page 4).
Businesses are not investing sufficiently in staff development, with most firms spending only 1%-4%
of their wage bill on training, despite acknowledging that skills gaps directly affect productivity and
competitiveness (Magidi & Chivige, 2026). These interconnected issues perpetuate a cycle of skills
inadequacy that hampers business growth and economic development.

2. Why do you think skills shortages are considered the biggest challenge facing businesses in
South Africa? Explain in THREE points and in a paragraph of 150 words.

Skills shortages are considered the biggest challenge facing South African businesses for several
compelling reasons. The skills gap directly undermines business productivity and innovation, as 55%
of employers reported workers lacked mathematical and data skills essential for evidence-based
planning and competitiveness (Magidi & Chivige, 2026). Without these fundamental competencies,
businesses cannot effectively adapt to technological changes or make informed strategic decisions.

The shortage of soft skills, including creativity, problem-solving, and work ethic, affects critical
thinking and practical application of knowledge, with over 60% of employers rating these skills as
only minimally adequate (ENG1503, 501. Page 4). This limits businesses' capacity to innovate and
solve real-world problems. The lack of environmental sustainability skills restricts businesses' ability
to compete in emerging green markets, particularly as environmental regulations tighten (Magidi &
Chivige, 2026). These deficiencies collectively hamper business growth, competitiveness, and
long-term sustainability in an increasingly challenging economic environment.
