1. Use a 45-degree set square to reproduce the orthographic drawing in figure 1 into an
isometric projection. Your drawing must include dimensions, borderlines, and a title block with
the following details:
Geometric Construction Steps (45° Set Square Method)
To convert an orthographic projection into an isometric view manually using drawing tools
(specifically using a 45set square alongside a 30/60∘ set square or T-square):
A) Establish the Baseline & Axis Lines:
Draw a horizontal reference line near the bottom of your drawing space.
Draw a vertical center axis line perpendicular to the horizontal line (90 ∘ ).
Mark your starting origin point O on the baseline.
B) Set the Isometric Angles:
Measure or construct the standard isometric axes extending at 30 ∘ to the left and right of the
horizontal baseline. (Note: If using a 45 ∘ set square directly for isometric approximation or
axonometric grids, align the hypotenuse with your T-square to project standard 30 ∘ /60 ∘ or
45 ∘ isometric construction lines).
C) Transfer Orthographic Dimensions:
Take the Width (W), Height (H), and Depth (D) from Figure 1 of your DRC1501 assessment
paper.
Mark the total length along the right axis (Width), the total depth along the left axis (Depth),
and the total height along the vertical axis (Height).
D) Construct the Isometric Enclosing Box:
Draw light construction lines (guidelines) parallel to the three main axes from these points to
form a 3D rectangular box (bounding box).
E) Detail the Features:
Sloped/Angled Surfaces: Measure the distances along the principal orthographic axes first.
Connect the non-isometric points directly (slopes do not follow the 30 ∘ /45 ∘ axes directly).
Cylindrical/Circular Elements: Construct isometric ellipses using the four-center method inside
their respective grid squares.
F) Inking & Dimensioning:
Darken all visible object outlines. Hide or omit invisible detail lines unless explicitly required.
Add dimension lines parallel to the isometric axes, keeping them clear of the object geometry.
