Introduction to Psychology • Professional Revision Notes 2

, 1. WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY?
DEFINITION
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior. Behavior is observable; mental processes include thinking,
feeling, remembering, perceiving and deciding.

FOUR GOALS
Describe what happens → Explain why → Predict when → Influence behavior using evidence-based methods.

WHY SCIENTIFIC?
Psychologists use systematic observation, measurement, hypotheses and research instead of relying only on intuition.

EXAMPLE
If students perform differently after different amounts of sleep, psychology asks what was measured, what other
variables matter and whether the evidence supports a causal claim.

DESCRIBE → EXPLAIN → PREDICT → INFLUENCE

EXAM TRAPS + QUICK RECALL
• Mind ≠ brain alone.
• Personal experience is not automatically scientific evidence.

SELF-CHECK
What is the central idea of this chapter? Give one example.
