PSY 355 Module One Milestone Template

Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

Part One

In 3 to 5 sentences for each rubric criterion, apply the conceptual foundations of motivation
orientation to your lived experience by responding to the following:

1. Describe which motivation orientation, autonomous or controlled, is most relevant to
you and why.
The motivation orientation that is most relevant to me would be autonomous. I would
relate more to autonomous orientation motivation when it comes to school because I do
not need to do it but I enjoy it. Since it is one thing as a mom that I get to do for myself, I
enjoy just being able to do my coursework and receive a degree at the end.

2. Describe how motivation orientation influences level of engagement.
Motivation orientation does in fact influence the level of engagement someone has. The
more motivated you are to do something the more engaged you are to it. You might not
be as motivated in a controlled orientation vs. an autonomous orientation. Usually you
are more engaged something you are choosing for yourself.

3. Describe an authentic example of how conformity has been both detrimental and
essential to your well-being.
An example of conformity that has been detrimental and essential to my well-being
would be not having straight teeth. In most instances everyone around me has this
beautiful smile while my teeth are not so great. This has been detrimental to my self-
esteem because I do not feel as beautiful as I should because of it. All these commercials
and ads you see everywhere you see people with beautiful teeth. I then decided to
purchase braces without fully being able to afford them for a year which resulted me
having to take them off and my teeth shifting back to normal. I guess it was important for
me to go through this to realize that we are beautiful no matter what, you can be loved
just as you are.

4. Describe the strengths and limitations of an autonomously motivated mindset as it applies
to emotional intelligence.
A strength of an autonomously motivated mindset would be how engaged and willing to
participate they are. Since they had full control over this decision since it was something
they chose to do. A limitation of someone who is an autonomously motivated person
would be that they have too many things they are engaged in which doesn’t benefit their
outcomes to what they do.

Part Two

1

, Next, in 3 to 5 sentences for each criterion, describe the practical applications of motivation
orientation within the leadership context by responding to the following:

1. Describe the types of values that you believe would help to promote an autonomously
motivated mindset in those you serve.
Some values I believe would benefit to promote an autonomously motivated mindset
would be being supportive so they have success on what they are involved in. This will
also help their creative side. Another good value would be patience because sometimes
you need to be more patient for them as to sometimes they are overworking themselves.

2. Describe how you could support others in their own motivation.
Some ways to support others in their own motivation is guiding them on the right
direction. It is a journey they are going through so understanding that journey can help
tremendously to be able to motivate them even further. It is a way to get them excited on
what is to come.

3. Describe an example of how your understanding of motivation orientation can help you
engage in more compassionate, empathetic leadership.
An example of motivation orientation can be in my case having my son play a sport. In
order to see how to support him properly I would need to understand if he really has a passion
for the sport or if he is playing to make someone happy. When understanding their motivation it
can help you coordinate better when it comes to their engagement in a more compassionate,
empathetic leadership.
