Activity 1: Differentiated Teaching Approaches to Cater for Learner Diversity
To implement differentiated teaching in my Grade R classroom at Lambani Primary, I recognise that
learner diversity encompasses differences in socioeconomic status, cultural background, home
language, prior knowledge, and developmental readiness (Tomlinson, 2014). Differentiation is
therefore not a single strategy but a philosophical approach that guides all instructional decisions.
It involves proactively modifying curriculum content, processes, products, and the learning
environment to meet the varied needs of all 26 learners (Tomlinson & Imbeau, 2010). The process
begins with ongoing formative assessment through systematic observation, anecdotal records, and
checklists to determine each child's readiness, interests, and learning profile, whether visual,
auditory, or kinesthetic (Department of Basic Education, 2011).
In terms of content differentiation, I adapt what is taught by presenting information through
multiple modalities. For example, when introducing a new theme such as "My Family," I use a big
book, storytelling with puppets, and digital images to cater to different comprehension levels
(Diamond & Powell, 2011). For learners who require additional support, I simplify vocabulary and
use concrete objects, while for those who are ready for enrichment, I introduce more complex
vocabulary and encourage them to retell the story independently (Gregory & Chapman, 2013). The
process is differentiated by varying teaching strategies, including direct instruction for some
learners, guided discovery for others, and peer tutoring for collaborative learning (Subban, 2006).
In a Mathematics sorting activity, some learners receive one-on-one support with a limited set of
objects, while others work in pairs to sort a larger, more complex set and justify their sorting
criteria (Van de Walle et al., 2013). I also adjust the level of scaffolding, providing picture cards and
verbal prompts for struggling learners and open-ended questions for advanced learners to extend
their thinking (Heacox, 2012).
Regarding product differentiation, I offer multiple ways for learners to demonstrate their
understanding, acknowledging that children express knowledge differently (Tomlinson, 2014).
Instead of requiring all learners to complete the same worksheet, I allow choices such as drawing a
picture, building a model with blocks, dictating a story to the teacher, or engaging in role-play
(Diamond & Powell, 2011). This approach respects diverse talents and learning preferences while
ensuring that each child can succeed. For learners whose home language differs from the Language
of Learning and Teaching, I provide additional visual supports, use gestures and realia, and allow
