A1. Discuss the political motivations for English imperialism:
The political motivation for English imperialism was economic as well as to gain power.
After Spain and France established trade networks in different parts of the new world, England
wanted to expand their influence and compete with other nations. England knew they needed to start
exploration, or they may never have the chance to. They failed at many attempts but finally came
through when they sent over citizens with different types of seeds to plant. The citizens were able to
plant seeds and establish plantations and send their crops back to England. This allowed England to
become wealthy and established in the Western Hemisphere.
A2. Describe the social pressures that contributed to the English colonization of North America:
The change in population and economics are two social pressures that contributed to
England's colonization of North America. After the establishment of the crops in North America,
England became overpopulated because people were living longer and healthier lives, famine was
scarce, and people were having more children. With overpopulation comes inflation and a rise in
rent all over England. With inflation and a rise in rent came the idea of moving north. They
believed it would improve their livelihood and provide them with a better life full of posterity. This
would change their lives for the good and would lead to a brighter and wealthier future.

Massachusetts Bay:
Economic Systems
Women scavenged for wild foods while males hunted and fished.
A few crops were planted that were utilized for local trade and some consumption.
They were reliant on the proceeds from the purchase and sale of African American Slaves.
Some of the main resources were fish, timber, and blacksmiths.
Social Characteristics
They banned drinking and dancing.
You had to be a member of the church to vote
Puritans who lived in this colony primarily ran it.
They upheld the father of the household above all others.
Women that came from big households had numerous children themselves.
Political Systems
Puritans ran the colony.
Elected John Winthrop as their governor.
John Winthrop and the General Court transitioned into a general legislature.
