A1. My administrator has just informed me that a parent of an EL student has brought to his/her
attention that they are unhappy with the way I am communicating with their family. Instead of
overreacting to this news, I would take a step back and see what ways I can do better at my
communication with them. One thing I have learned is that two-way communication between parents
and teachers is extremely important for a student’s success.
One way to improve my communication skills with this family is to contact an interpreter who
can be provided with the Title III funded program. The interpreter can help me apologize for the lack of
communication and help me provide an appropriate form of support and communication that will satisfy
the needs of the parent and student.
I would set up a meeting at the convenience of the parent with the interpreter and my
administrator to discuss the expectations the parent may have for me and my communication. At the
meeting, we can also discuss monthly or quarterly meetings to discuss the student’s progress. To help
keep the parent informed weekly of the student’s progress and what is going on in and around the
classroom, I would send home a newsletter translated into the parent’s primary language.
Lastly, I would let the parent know that he/she can reach out to me with any concerns or
questions and that I appreciate him/her bringing this to our attention.
