 1 september 1939: Duitsland valt Polen binnen  oorlogsverklaring Fr. en GB
 USSR valt Polen vanuit oosten aan  verdelen grondgebied met Duitsland
 Blitzkrieg:
o Denemarken en Noorwegen snel veroverd
o 10 mei 1940: aanval op België, Nederland, Luxemburg (Plan fall gelb)

 doel: lage landen bezetten + deel Fr.
troepenmacht uitschakelen
 Fransen: maginotlinie
 10 mei 1940: invasie België
 pantsertroepen door de Ardennen gesteund
door jachtbommenwerpers
 opmars naar de kust: geallieerden afsnijden
 28 mei: Capitulatie België en Nederland


Uitbreiding van het conflict
 1940: Italië doet intrede in de oorlog
(bondgenoot Duitsland)
 uitbreiding gevechtsterrein: Noord-Afrika,
Albanië,Joegoslavië, Griekenland,...
 22 juni 1940: Frankrijk capituleert maar strijd
gaat verder vanuit GB
 Battle of Brittain (juli – oktober 1940, D32)
 22 juni 1941: Duitse invasie in USSR (operatie
Barbarossa)
o schending Molotov-Riebentrop-pact
