PADI - Being a Diver I Exam Questions
and Answers
1. Something underwater that does not float and does not sink is
Answer neutrally buoyant
2. If an object is neutrally buoyant in salt water, what will happen to
the object if I put it into fresh water?
Answer The object will sink.
Salt water is heavier than fresh water because it has dissolved minerals in it. This means it causes
more upward force (buoyancy) on an object. An object that is neutrally buoyant in salt water would
sink in fresh water because there is less upward force.
3. A diver is 30 metres/99 feet underwater. The water

, pressure at this depth would be times more than the pressure at
the surface.
Answer four times more
Pressure increases by one bar/ata for every 10 metres/33 feet of depth. Adding one bar/ata for the
pressure at the surface plus three bar/ata for the water pressure at 30 metres/99 feet, equals four
bar/ata.
4. If I hold a glass full of air upside down, and I take
it to the bottom of the swimming pool without tipping it, the density
(thickness) of the air inside the glass will be at the surface.
Answer As water pressure increases, the volume of an air space will decrease. This causes
the density of the air inside to increase and air molecules are pushed closer together. The air density
of air inside the glass will be greater than at the surface.
5. What should I do if I can't equalize (clear) my ears or sinuses
while I am descending (going down)?
