2. What is regenerative design?


Regenerative design
This approach aims to be net-positive by restoring ecosystems, building social health, and replenishing
natural resources instead of only minimising damage. It is defined as a method where human systems
are designed to co-exist and co-evolve with natural systems to ensure planetary and social health.


Net-positive
This term describes a state where a project or intervention gives back more to the environment and
society than it takes away. In the context of regenerative design, it represents a shift from causing
ecological loss to achieving active ecological gain.

Developed by Kate Raworth, this framework defines a safe and just space for humanity between a social
foundation of needs and the ecological ceiling of planetary boundaries. It provides a model for societies
to thrive while ensuring they do not overshoot the Earth's environmental limits.


7. Who can drive change?


Sufficiency
This principle involves living well with less physical space and fewer materials while increasing shared
value through collective infrastructure. It challenges the consumption-heavy status quo by prioritizing
quality of life and community participation over individual material accumulation.


8. Regenerative design across scales


Whanganui River
In a landmark example of regenerative governance, this river in New Zealand was granted the legal rights
of a living entity. This shift treats nature as a stakeholder with its own inherent rights rather than just a
resource to be managed or exploited.
