Scenario - ASSIGNMENT 3
The process of managing conflict in the Public Service requires a very serious
determination by two parties (the victims and the mediators) to ensure that
conflict is resolved in-line with the organisational policy. You are expected to
discuss the below provided topic and use practical examples in your discussions.
Topic: Identify and further demonstrate how each conflict can be managed in the
public service.
1. Intrapersonal Conflict
Intrapersonal conflict happens inside one employee. It comes when a worker is confused
or stressed about work. Lesson 14.4 of PUB4865 says the first step is to identify
conditions that can cause conflict like unclear job descriptions and poor top-down
communication. For example, a clerk in a government office gets two different
instructions on the same day. Manager A says "finish the report", Manager B says "go to
a meeting". The worker feels anxious. This is the awareness stage because the worker
now feels the problem. In the participation stage, the worker may use avoidance by
doing nothing. But this does not solve the problem. Managers must then act to lower
the conflict level. According to Lesson 14.4, managers can use resolution techniques.
First, they must use clear communication. The manager should meet the employee
alone, listen, and explain which task is more urgent and give a clear deadline. This
removes confusion.
Second, structural changes help. The manager can check if the job description is clear. If
not, it must be updated so the employee knows who to report to. Third, cooperation
and support are important. If the worker is very stressed, the manager can refer the
employee to the Employee Wellness Program. Olson and Hopkins (2022) explain that
support services help employees deal with work stress before it becomes serious. To
prevent this conflict, managers should have regular meetings with staff. This improves
communication and stops small problems from growing. In short, intrapersonal conflict
is managed by identifying unclear jobs, talking to the employee, giving clear
