Classification of Verbs
1. Principal Verb (main verb): 2. Auxiliary Verb (helping verb):
A verb that can express complete sense independently A verb that helps the principal verb to express tense,
without depending on another verb. mood, or voice.
Example: I play. (Here 'play' is the Principal Verb) Example: Do you play? (Here 'Do' is the Auxiliary Verb)
RULES FOR RIGHT FORM OF VERBS
Rule 1 Universal Truth & Habitual Fact
If a sentence expresses a universal truth or a habitual fact, it takes the Present Indefinite Tense.
( চিরন্তন সত্য বা অভ্যাসগত ক র্ম বাঝা লে Present Indefinite Tense হয়।)
1. The sun (set) in the west.
➔ Ans: The sun sets in the west.
2. He (walk) by the riverside every morning.
➔ Ans: He walks by the riverside every morning.
Rule 2 3rd Person Singular Subject in Present Indefinite
In Present Indefinite Tense, if the Subject is 3rd Person Singular Number (he, she, it, Karim, etc.), add s/es to
the base verb.
(Subject 3rd Person Singular Number হ লে verb-এর শে ষে s/es যুক্ত হয়।)
1. Shamim always (speak) the truth.
➔ Ans: Shamim always speaks the truth.
Rule 3 Time Adverbs Indicating Present Indefinite
Sentences containing adverbs like always, regularly, sometimes, often, everyday, daily, usually, generally,
normally take Present Indefinite Tense (unless a past time indicator is present).
(always, regularly, sometimes, often, everyday, daily, usually ইত্যা দি থাক লে Present Indefinite Tense হয়।)
1. Karim (go) to school regularly.
➔ Ans: Karim goes to school regularly.
Rule 4 Negative and Interrogative without Be-Verb
To make a sentence Negative or Interrogative without an auxiliary 'Be' verb (am, is, are, was, were), use do /
does / did according to Tense and Subject.
(Be verb বহীন বাক্য ক Negative বা Interrogative কর ত tense/subject অনুযায়ী do/does/did ব্যবহৃত হয়।)
1. Nazneen not (sing) a song.
➔ Ans: Nazneen does not sing a song.

, Rule 5 Actions Happening Now (Present Continuous)
If a sentence contains now, at this moment, presently, at present, it uses Present Continuous Tense (am/is/are
+ verb-ing).
(now, at this moment, presently, at present থাক লে Present Continuous Tense হয়।)
1. He (read) a book now.
➔ Ans: He is reading a book now.
Rule 6 Verbs Following Have / Has / Had
The verb immediately following have, has, or had must be in its Past Participle form (V3).
(Have/has/had-এর পর verb-এর Past Participle (V3) হয়।)
1. You have (do) the work.
➔ Ans: You have done the work.
Rule 7 Just, Already, Recently (Present Perfect)
If a sentence contains just, just now, already, yet, ever, recently, lately, use Present Perfect Tense (have/has +
V3).
(Just, already, yet, ever, recently ইত্যা দি থাক লে Present Perfect Tense হয়।)
1. I (see) him recently.
➔ Ans: I have seen him recently.
Rule 8 Past Time Indicators (Past Indefinite)
If a sentence contains past indicators like yesterday, ago, long ago, last night, last week, once, in 1990, use Past
Indefinite Tense (V2).
(Yesterday, ago, long ago, last night ইত্যা দি অতীত ন দির্ম শেক শেব্দ থাক লে Past Indefinite Tense হয়।)
1. Father (come) home last night.
➔ Ans: Father came home last night.
Rule 9 No sooner had ... than / Scarcely had ... when
In structures like No sooner had ... than, Scarcely had ... when, Hardly had ... before/when, the first clause takes
Past Participle (V3) and the second clause takes Past Indefinite (V2).
(No sooner had...than এর ক্ষে ত্রে প্রথ verb-টি V3 এবং ২য় verb-টি V2 (Past form) হয়।)
1. No sooner had she (see) the police than she (run) away.
➔ Ans: No sooner had she seen the police than she ran away.
Rule 10 Use of Before and After
• Before: Past Perfect + before + Past Indefinite.
• After: Past Indefinite + after + Past Perfect.
(Before-এর পূ বর্ম এবং After-এর প র Past Perfect Tense হয়।)
1. The patient (die) before the doctor came.
➔ Ans: The patient had died before the doctor came.
2. The patient died after the doctor (come).
➔ Ans: The patient died after the doctor had come.
