My idea(s) for topic/title
My A-Levels have strong mathematical foundations and I would like to show my passion for
maths through my EPQ. This is why I have chosen potential topics that heavily relate to
mathematics and physics.
I have always had a strong interest in astrophysics, which stemmed from briefly studying it
during my GCSE Physics course. It is for this reason that I am considering researching parallel
universes and how we could possibly communicate or even travel to them. I am interested in
pursuing research in this topic as it contains a large amount of theoretical physics. I intend to
explore the different theories surrounding parallel universes, for example, twin world models,
cyclic theories and M theory. These topics will provide a foundation for me to further my
research in the feasibility of communication and travel to these parallel universes. I plan to use
credible and reliable resources, which will mostly be made up of peer-reviewed research and
articles. This will be closely followed by the professional opinions of astrophysicists, who I
will reach out to as a form of primary research.
However, after reading “The Promise of Parallel Universes”, (written by Greg Miller, 2007), it
has become clear to me that to continue researching parallel universes was not feasible due to
the lack of solid evidence that I could use for my project. The topic of parallel universes,
although fascinating, is extremely futuristic and not enough research has been done to create a
proper, well-informed project. There is an inadequate amount of research that I could use for
my project - this would lead to a heavily opinion-based and evaluative project rather than one
that is fact-based. It is for this reason that I am reconsidering my topic.
After reflecting on my A-Level subjects and potential career paths, it is apparent that all four of
my subjects (Physics, Economics, Maths, Further Maths) have a large mathematical foundation
and it is the basis of the careers I am considering pursuing in the future. I am interested in
mechanical engineering or accounting and finance and both of these have a heavy
mathematical influence so I have decided it would be best to base my project on this.
I have looked into investigating unproven mathematical theories, focusing on why they have
not yet been solved. One specific theory that intrigues me is the Riemann Hypothesis which
was proposed in 1859 by Bernhard Riemann. The hypothesis states that all the non-obvious
zeros of the Riemann Zeta Function are complex numbers with a real part of ½. While this is
