, A. Zika Virus
B. Description of a chosen international outbreak:
• The name of the disease I am choosing to write about is the Zika Virus.
• The countries involved in this outbreak include Africa and Asia.
• The virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947, affecting monkeys. The first human cases are
detected in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. According to the World Health
Organization in 2007, “Zika spreads from Africa and Asia to cause the first large outbreak in
humans on the Pacific Island of Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia. Prior to this event,
no outbreaks and only 14 cases of human Zika virus disease had been documented worldwide.”
(CDC)
B1. Epidemiological Determinants and Risk Factors
The Zika virus is primarily spread through bites from infected mosquitos. It can also be spread
through sexual activity with an infected person and from an infected mother to her unborn fetus. The
main risk factor for contracting the Zika virus is location. Avoid tropical areas with a high mosquito
population, especially areas that have had known outbreaks of the Zika virus. Virulence of the zika virus
is very low. Only 1 in 5 people will develop symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, rash, headache,
conjunctivitis, and joint and muscle pain. These symptoms are usually mild, therefore the virulence of
the Zika virus is very low. Climate considerations include temperature and humidity. This particular
outbreak occurs near the equator, where it is very hot with high humidity.
