Question 1 (6 marks): Absorptive Capacity
Definition
Absorptive capacity refers to an organisation's ability to recognise the value of new,
external information, assimilate (interpret and understand) that information, and apply
it to commercial ends (Venter & Botha, 2022). It is the capacity of a firm to identify,
acquire, digest and exploit knowledge from its external environment in order to build
competitive advantage and support innovation and strategic renewal. Zahra and
George (2002) refine this into a set of organisational routines and processes by which
firms acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit knowledge, distinguishing between a
firm's potential absorptive capacity (the ability to acquire and assimilate knowledge)
and its realised absorptive capacity (the ability to transform and exploit that knowledge
for commercial benefit).
Judgement of Coca-Cola's absorptive capacity across the four dimensions
Acquisition
Acquisition refers to a firm's capability to identify and obtain externally generated
knowledge that is critical to its operations. Coca-Cola acquires information by
monitoring consumer preferences, regulatory developments such as South Africa’s
Health Promotion Levy, environmental pressures and packaging requirements (The
Coca-Cola Company, 2026a). Coca-Cola demonstrates strong acquisition capability:
it draws on external research such as the UNU-WIDER working paper on the impact
of the Health Promotion Levy, monitors global environmental and packaging data
through its own Environmental Update reporting process, and engages with external
partners such as PETCO, Collect-a-Can and The Glass Recycling Company to gather
knowledge on recycling and circular-economy practice. Its five-segment global
structure (EMEA, Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific and Bottling Investments)
is explicitly designed, according to the case, to allow knowledge and innovation to
move across the system, indicating a deliberate architecture for acquiring insight from
diverse markets, including South Africa.
