SECTION A: Multiple Choice & Short Questions [12 Marks]
Which energy....................or turbine?
1. A. Solar thermal heater
2. B. Solar PV cell
● Marking Guidance [1 Mark]: * Award 1 mark for option B.
○ If a student writes "Photovoltaic panel" or "PV cell" instead of the letter, award full
credit. If they select A or C, award 0 marks (these produce heat, not direct
electricity via PV effect).
Heat transfer....................neighboring particles
1. A. Convection currents rising
2. C. Particles vibrating and colliding with neighboring particles
● Marking Guidance [1 Mark]: * Award 1 mark for option C.
○ If the student writes "Conduction", accept for 1 mark as it describes the same
mechanism. If they mention free electrons only, do not award marks unless C is
chosen, as vibrating/colliding is the fundamental requirement for all solids.
Which of....................energy source?
1. A. Biomass
2. C. Nuclear energy
● Marking Guidance [1 Mark]: * Award 1 mark for option C.
○ Students frequently confuse nuclear energy with renewables because it does not
emit CO2. If a student selects C, give full marks. If they choose A (Biomass), remind
them that trees/crops can be replanted, making them renewable.
Dull black....................thermal radiation
1. A. Good absorbers and poor emitters of thermal radiation
2. C. Good absorbers and good emitters of thermal radiation
● Marking Guidance [1 Mark]: * Award 1 mark for option C.
○ Dull black is the best absorber AND best emitter. If the student selects A or B
(mixing up absorption and emission properties), award 0 marks.
Complete the....................or not at all:
● Marking Guidance [4 Marks]:
