The Effect of Gamified Digital Platforms on Vocabulary Acquisition, Grammar Retention, and
Learner Motivation in Secondary Language Teaching

1) Introduction

Teaching a second or foreign language at the secondary level presents a unique set of pedagogical
challenges that distinguish it from other subject areas. Language learning requires the acquisition and
integration of multiple knowledge domains: vocabulary (the lexicon of words and their meanings),
grammar (the rules governing how words combine into phrases and sentences), pronunciation, and
pragmatics (Lightbown & Spada, 2013). Vocabulary acquisition is particularly foundational,
requiring learners to master thousands of word families and their multiple meanings, collocations,
and grammatical patterns (Nation, 2006). Grammar presents different but equally significant
challenges, as abstract rules must be internalised and applied in real-time communication rather than
merely stated (Ellis, 2006). Learner motivation is perhaps the most critical factor in secondary
language learning success, yet it is also the most variable and fragile, with many learners viewing
language classes as mandatory, irrelevant, or too difficult (Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2011).

The problem this study addresses is the persistent challenge of supporting vocabulary acquisition,
grammar retention, and learner motivation in secondary language teaching, and the potential of
gamified digital platforms such as Duolingo and Kahoot! to address these challenges. While
gamification has been widely adopted in language education, there is limited empirical research on
its effectiveness for grammar retention, long-term retention, and differential effects for learners with
specific learning difficulties. The central research question guiding this study is: What are the effects
of gamified digital platforms on vocabulary acquisition, grammar retention, and learner motivation
in secondary language teaching?

This question is examined through three sub-questions:
(1) What are the effects of gamified platform use compared to traditional instruction on secondary
learners' vocabulary acquisition and grammar retention measured through production tasks as well as
recognition tasks?
(2) What is the long-term retention of vocabulary and grammar knowledge acquired through
gamified platforms? and
(3) Do the effects of gamified platform use differ for learners with specific learning difficulties
affecting language learning compared to learners without these difficulties?

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of gamified digital platforms on vocabulary
acquisition, grammar retention, and learner motivation in secondary language teaching, with a
particular focus on measuring grammar through production tasks, assessing long-term retention, and
analysing differential effects for learners with specific learning difficulties. The study aims to
generate evidence-informed recommendations for language teaching, teacher education, and policy
in ways that support effective, inclusive language instruction.
