Introduction to Convulsions
Convulsions are sudden involuntary muscle contractions that cause a series of rapid
shaking or jerking movements. These movements are a sign of potential underlying
neurologic or mental health conditions. Frequently, this symptom is associated with
epileptic seizures. At other times, they suggest nonepileptic seizures. Understanding
the cause of convulsions and administering appropriate treatment depends on the
underlying cause. Treatment may involve medications to control seizures, fever
management, or other specific interventions targeted at the cause of the
convulsions.
This learning module focuses on disease processes associated with convulsions and
enables you to meet the following course outcomes:
• CO 1: Analyze pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with selected disease
states across the lifespan.
• CO 2: Examine the way in which homeostatic, adaptive, and compensatory
physiological mechanisms can be supported and/or altered through specific
therapeutic interventions across the lifespan.
• CO 3: Distinguish risk factors associated with selected disease states across the
lifespan.
• CO 4: Integrate advanced pathophysiological concepts in the diagnosis and
treatment of health problems in selected populations.
