ANE Interview Guide
Instructions: Select five of the following core questions for your semi-structured
interview with an academic nurse educator. These questions are designed to provide
insight about the evolving roles of the academic nurse educator including job duties,
responsibilities, and values in the current role.
You are also required to develop five follow-up questions for the interview, in addition to
the five selected core questions. Your questions should explore the academic nurse
educator’s role within the formal academic setting, responsibilities as a teacher, in
curriculum development and change, interprofessional collaboration, and working within
the academic community.
5 Core Questions
1. What are the qualities most needed to be a successful academic nurse
educator?
- “Honestly, flexibility and patience are huge. Nursing students come in with all
different backgrounds, stress levels, and learning styles, so you have to meet
them where they are. Strong communication is just as important as clinical
knowledge. You also have to be comfortable with constant change.
Healthcare is always evolving, and education has to keep up with that. And I’d
say a genuine desire to see students succeed makes all the difference.”
2. Describe your role, as an ANE, in facilitating student learning in meeting learning
outcomes?
- “My role is less about lecturing and more about guiding. I try to create
learning experiences where students can connect what they’re learning to
real patient care. That might be through case studies, simulation, or clinical
