, 1. PLANT PHYSIOLOGY
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make food using CO■, water and sunlight. It occurs in
chloroplasts. Light reaction (in thylakoids) produces ATP and NADPH; dark reaction / Calvin cycle (in stroma) fixes
CO■ into sugar. C3 plants use only Calvin cycle; C4 plants have Kranz anatomy and minimise photorespiration.
Respiration releases energy from food. Glycolysis (cytoplasm) → Krebs cycle (mitochondrial matrix) → Electron
transport chain (inner mitochondrial membrane). Plant hormones: Auxin (cell elongation, apical dominance),
Gibberellin (stem elongation, seed germination), Cytokinin (cell division), Ethylene (fruit ripening), Abscisic acid
(stress hormone, stomatal closure).
Q1. The site of light reaction of photosynthesis is:
A. Stroma
B. Thylakoid membrane
C. Cytoplasm
D. Matrix
✓ Correct Answer: B
Why this is correct: Light reaction takes place in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast where chlorophyll and
electron-transport components are located.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A is the site of dark reaction (Calvin cycle).
• C is the site of glycolysis.
• D is the mitochondrial matrix (Krebs cycle).
Q2. The first stable product of Calvin cycle in C3 plants is:
A. PGA (3-phosphoglyceric acid)
B. OAA (oxaloacetic acid)
C. RuBP
D. Glucose
✓ Correct Answer: A
Why this is correct: In C3 plants CO■ is fixed by RuBisCO into a 3-carbon compound, 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA).
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• B is the first product in C4 plants.
• C is the CO■ acceptor.
• D is the final product after many steps.
Q3. Kranz anatomy is found in:
A. C3 plants
B. C4 plants
C. CAM plants only
D. All plants
✓ Correct Answer: B
Why this is correct: C4 plants show Kranz anatomy – a special arrangement of mesophyll and bundle-sheath cells that helps
concentrate CO■ and reduce photorespiration.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A lack Kranz anatomy.
• C may show some features but classic Kranz is of C4.
• D is incorrect.
Q4. The enzyme RuBisCO is associated with:
A. Light reaction
B. Calvin cycle
C. Glycolysis
D. Krebs cycle
NEET 2027 | High-Weightage Biology | Part 3 – Plant Phys + Repro + Biotech + Cell Page 3
, ✓ Correct Answer: B
Why this is correct: RuBisCO (Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase) is the key enzyme of the Calvin cycle that
fixes CO■.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A involves photosystems and electron transport.
• C and D are respiratory pathways.
Q5. Photorespiration is minimum in:
A. C3 plants
B. C4 plants
C. All plants equally
D. Only in CAM plants
✓ Correct Answer: B
Why this is correct: C4 plants minimise photorespiration by concentrating CO■ in bundle-sheath cells where RuBisCO
works.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A show high photorespiration in hot conditions.
• C is wrong.
• D also reduce it but classic answer is C4.
Q6. Glycolysis occurs in the:
A. Mitochondria
B. Cytoplasm
C. Chloroplast
D. Nucleus
✓ Correct Answer: B
Why this is correct: Glycolysis (breakdown of glucose to pyruvate) takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell and does not
require oxygen or mitochondria.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A is for Krebs cycle and ETC.
• C is for photosynthesis.
• D is for genetic material.
Q7. The end product of glycolysis under aerobic conditions is:
A. Lactic acid
B. Ethanol
C. Pyruvic acid
D. Acetyl CoA
✓ Correct Answer: C
Why this is correct: Glycolysis converts glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid. Under aerobic conditions pyruvate then
enters mitochondria.
✗ Why the other options are wrong:
• A is produced in anaerobic muscle.
• B is produced in alcoholic fermentation.
• D is formed after pyruvate oxidation.
Q8. Krebs cycle (TCA cycle) takes place in the:
A. Cytoplasm
B. Mitochondrial matrix
C. Inner mitochondrial membrane
D. Outer mitochondrial membrane
✓ Correct Answer: B
