Polyvagal Theory
Polyvagal Theory is a neurophysiological theory that explains how the autonomic
nervous system influences emotional regulation, behaviour, relationships and
responses to safety and threat. Developed by neuroscientist Dr Stephen Porges
in the 1990s, the theory proposes that the nervous system continuously scans
the environment for signs of danger or safety and automatically activates
different physiological states to promote survival. Rather than viewing responses
such as aggression, withdrawal or dissociation as deliberate choices, Polyvagal
Theory suggests they are adaptive responses generated by the nervous system.
Within social work, the theory provides a trauma-informed framework for
understanding behaviour, supporting emotional regulation and promoting safe,
trusting relationships with children and adults who have experienced adversity
(Porges, 2011).
Polyvagal Theory developed from advances in neuroscience examining the role
of the vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve that connects the brain to major
organs including the heart, lungs and digestive system. Porges argued that
traditional understandings of the autonomic nervous system, based solely on the
balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, were
incomplete. He proposed that the vagus nerve contains two functionally distinct
pathways that influence how humans respond to safety and threat. This theory
has become increasingly influential within trauma-informed practice, attachment
research, psychotherapy and social work, although aspects of the theory remain
debated within neuroscience.
A central principle of Polyvagal Theory is that the nervous system constantly
performs neuroception. Neuroception refers to the brain's unconscious
process of detecting cues of safety, danger or life threat without conscious
awareness. Through neuroception, individuals automatically assess facial
expressions, tone of voice, body language, environmental cues and previous
experiences to determine whether they are safe.
When the nervous system perceives safety, individuals are able to think clearly,
communicate effectively and engage socially. When danger is detected, survival
responses occur automatically.
The theory identifies three primary physiological states.
1. Ventral Vagal State (Social Engagement)
, The ventral vagal system is activated when an individual feels safe and
connected to others. This is considered the optimal state for learning,
communication and healthy relationships.
Characteristics include:
Feeling calm and emotionally regulated.
Ability to think clearly.
Curiosity and problem solving.
Positive social interaction.
Empathy and trust.
Effective communication.
Emotional flexibility.
Within this state, individuals are able to engage with others, regulate emotions
and respond thoughtfully to challenges.
2. Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight)
When the nervous system detects danger, the sympathetic nervous system
activates the fight-or-flight response.
Characteristics include:
Anxiety.
Hypervigilance.
Anger.
Aggression.
Panic.
Increased heart rate.
Restlessness.
Impulsivity.
These responses prepare the individual to confront or escape perceived threats.
Although adaptive during genuine danger, prolonged sympathetic activation can
contribute to emotional dysregulation and chronic stress.
3. Dorsal Vagal State (Freeze or Shutdown)
If the nervous system perceives overwhelming or inescapable threat, the dorsal
vagal system may trigger a freeze or shutdown response.
