Situated Learning Theory

Situated Learning Theory is a social learning theory that proposes learning
occurs most effectively through active participation in real-life social and
practical contexts rather than through the acquisition of knowledge in isolation.
Developed by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, the theory argues that learning is
fundamentally a social process in which individuals develop knowledge, skills and
professional identities through participation in communities of practice. Rather
than viewing learning as simply transferring information from teacher to learner,
Situated Learning Theory emphasises that understanding develops through
observation, collaboration, experience and engagement in authentic activities.
Within social work, the theory is particularly relevant to practice education,
professional development and reflective learning because students and
practitioners acquire knowledge through direct participation in real-world
practice settings (Lave & Wenger, 1991).

Situated Learning Theory emerged during the late 1980s and early 1990s in
response to traditional educational models that separated theoretical learning
from practical experience. Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger observed that many
professional skills are learned not primarily through formal teaching but by
working alongside experienced practitioners in authentic environments. They
argued that learning is inseparable from the social, cultural and organisational
contexts in which it occurs, meaning that knowledge cannot be fully understood
without considering the environment in which it is applied (Lave & Wenger,
1991).

A central concept within Situated Learning Theory is the community of practice.
A community of practice consists of individuals who share common goals,
knowledge and professional activities while learning from one another through
regular interaction. Members develop shared language, values, skills and
approaches to problem solving over time. Within social work, communities of
practice include multidisciplinary teams, safeguarding partnerships, supervision
groups and professional learning networks, where practitioners continually
develop their knowledge through collaboration and shared experience.

Another key concept is legitimate peripheral participation. Lave and Wenger
proposed that learners initially participate at the edge of a community of
practice by observing experienced practitioners and undertaking simpler tasks.
As knowledge, confidence and competence develop, learners gradually assume
