Recovery Model

The Recovery Model is a person-centred approach to mental health that
emphasises hope, empowerment and the belief that individuals can lead
meaningful and fulfilling lives regardless of the presence of mental illness.
Rather than defining recovery as the complete absence of symptoms, the model
views recovery as a personal and ongoing journey in which individuals develop
resilience, regain control over their lives and pursue goals that are meaningful to
them. Within social work, the Recovery Model shifts the focus from illness and
deficits towards strengths, personal choice and social inclusion, promoting
partnership between practitioners and the people they support (Slade, 2009).

The Recovery Model emerged during the 1980s through the mental health
service user movement in the United States and was later adopted
internationally. Individuals with lived experience of mental illness challenged
traditional medical approaches that often viewed recovery as unlikely or
dependent solely on clinical treatment. They argued that people could
experience hope, purpose and improved quality of life even while continuing to
experience symptoms. This perspective was reinforced by research
demonstrating that many individuals with severe mental illness achieved

achieving outcomes that reflect their own values and aspirations.

Another important principle is hope, which is regarded as the foundation of
recovery. The model recognises that people are more likely to engage with
support and pursue positive change when they believe recovery is possible.
Alongside hope, the Recovery Model promotes empowerment, encouraging
individuals to take an active role in decisions affecting their care while
recognising their strengths, skills and lived experiences. It also emphasises self-
