Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

The self-fulfilling prophecy is a sociological and psychological theory that
explains how expectations or beliefs about an individual can influence behaviour
in ways that cause those expectations to become true. The concept suggests
that when people are treated according to certain assumptions, they may begin
to behave in ways that confirm those assumptions, regardless of whether they
were initially accurate. Self-fulfilling prophecies can have both positive and
negative effects, shaping confidence, motivation, relationships and opportunities.
Within social work, understanding this theory helps practitioners recognise how
expectations held by professionals, families, schools and society can influence
individuals' development, behaviour and life outcomes (Merton, 1948).

The concept of the self-fulfilling prophecy was first introduced by sociologist
Robert K. Merton in 1948. Merton described it as "a false definition of the
situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the originally false conception
come true." He argued that people's beliefs and expectations influence their
actions, and these actions can ultimately produce outcomes that appear to
confirm the original expectation. Although the belief may initially have been
inaccurate, the behavioural responses it generates cause it to become reality
(Merton, 1948).

Later psychological research expanded the theory by examining how
expectations influence performance and behaviour. One of the best-known
examples is the Pygmalion Effect, demonstrated by Rosenthal and Jacobson
(1968). In their study, teachers were incorrectly informed that certain pupils
were expected to make exceptional academic progress. Over time, these pupils
showed greater improvement than their peers, partly because teachers
unknowingly gave them more encouragement, attention and positive feedback.
This research demonstrated that positive expectations can improve outcomes,
just as negative expectations can limit them.

A central principle of the self-fulfilling prophecy is that expectations influence
interactions. Individuals who are expected to succeed often receive greater
encouragement, opportunities and support, increasing their likelihood of success.
Conversely, those who are expected to fail may receive less encouragement,
lower expectations or more negative responses, reducing confidence and
reinforcing poor outcomes. The theory therefore highlights the powerful
influence of interpersonal relationships and social environments on behaviour.
