Resilience

Resilience is the ability of individuals, families and communities to adapt
positively, recover and continue functioning despite experiencing adversity,
trauma or significant life challenges. Rather than being a fixed personality trait,
resilience is now understood as a dynamic process that develops through
interactions between personal strengths, supportive relationships and
environmental resources. It enables people to cope with stress, overcome
difficulties and maintain or regain wellbeing following challenging experiences.
Within social work, resilience is a key concept because practitioners seek to
identify and strengthen protective factors that help individuals manage adversity
while recognising that resilience can be developed and supported throughout life
(Masten, 2014).

Early research into resilience focused on children who demonstrated positive
developmental outcomes despite experiencing significant adversity, such as
poverty, abuse or parental mental illness. One of the most influential
researchers, Emmy Werner, followed a group of children from birth into
adulthood and found that many who experienced early disadvantage developed
into healthy, successful adults. Werner concluded that resilience was influenced
not only by personal characteristics but also by supportive relationships, positive
role models and opportunities within the wider environment (Werner & Smith,
1982). Later researchers, including Ann Masten, described resilience as "ordinary
magic", emphasising that it develops through everyday protective processes
rather than extraordinary personal qualities (Masten, 2014).

Resilience theory identifies both risk factors and protective factors. Risk factors
increase the likelihood of negative outcomes and may include poverty, abuse,
neglect, discrimination, social isolation, chronic illness or family conflict.
Protective factors reduce the impact of adversity and promote positive
adaptation. These include secure relationships, supportive families, positive
friendships, effective coping skills, education, community resources and
opportunities to participate in meaningful activities. Resilience develops when
protective factors help individuals manage or overcome the effects of adversity.

A central principle of resilience theory is that resilience does not mean avoiding
distress or never experiencing emotional difficulties. Individuals may experience
anxiety, grief, anger or sadness following adverse events while still
demonstrating resilience through their ability to adapt, seek support and
