Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach
that aims to improve an individual's quality of life by understanding the reasons
behind behaviours of concern and developing proactive strategies to promote
positive behavioural change. Rather than focusing on controlling or punishing
behaviour, PBS seeks to identify the underlying function that behaviour serves
and address unmet needs through supportive, preventative interventions. The
approach combines principles from applied behaviour analysis, person-centred
planning and social inclusion to reduce behaviours of concern while increasing
independence, wellbeing and participation. Within social work, Positive
Behaviour Support is widely used when supporting people with learning
disabilities, autism, acquired brain injuries and other complex needs (Gore et al.,
2022).

Positive Behaviour Support developed during the 1980s and 1990s as an
alternative to restrictive and punitive methods of behaviour management. It
evolved from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), incorporating behavioural
principles while placing greater emphasis on quality of life, human rights and
person-centred practice. Researchers recognised that behaviours of concern
often communicate unmet physical, emotional or social needs rather than simply
representing challenging conduct. PBS therefore shifted the focus from changing
behaviour alone to understanding why behaviours occur and improving the
environments in which people live (Carr et al., 2002).

A central principle of Positive Behaviour Support is that all behaviour has a
purpose or function. Individuals may use behaviour to communicate needs,
escape situations they find distressing, gain attention, access preferred activities
or respond to pain, anxiety or sensory experiences. Practitioners undertake
functional behavioural assessments to identify the factors that trigger, maintain
and reinforce behaviours of concern. This understanding enables interventions to
target the underlying causes rather than simply responding to the behaviour
itself.

Positive Behaviour Support involves several key components. Person-centred
planning ensures that interventions reflect the individual's goals, preferences
and strengths. Environmental adaptations reduce situations likely to trigger
distress by modifying routines, communication methods or physical
surroundings. Teaching new skills helps individuals develop alternative ways of
