A summary of the Medical Model in relation to social work.

Aperçu du contenu

Medical Model

The medical model is a theoretical framework that explains disability, illness and
impairment as conditions that originate within the individual and require
diagnosis, treatment or cure by healthcare professionals. It views physical,
mental or cognitive difficulties primarily as medical problems that can be
understood through biological or psychological causes. The model emphasises
assessment, diagnosis, intervention and rehabilitation with the aim of reducing
symptoms and improving functioning. Within social work, the medical model has
significantly influenced health and social care practice, particularly in areas such
as mental health, disability and long-term conditions. However, it is often
considered alongside broader social perspectives that recognise the influence of
environmental and societal factors on wellbeing (Bury, 2005).

The medical model developed alongside advances in medicine and scientific
understanding during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As knowledge of
disease, anatomy and psychology expanded, healthcare increasingly focused on
identifying the biological causes of illness and developing treatments to improve
health outcomes. This approach contributed to major advances in diagnosis,
surgery, medication and public health. Within mental health services, the
medical model also influenced the classification of mental disorders through
diagnostic systems such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

According to the medical model, illness or disability is understood primarily as an
individual's condition rather than as the result of wider social barriers.
Professionals assess symptoms, identify diagnoses and recommend interventions
designed to improve functioning or reduce impairment. Treatment may include
medication, surgery, psychological therapy, rehabilitation or other healthcare
interventions depending on the individual's needs. Decision making is often
guided by clinical expertise and evidence-based practice, with healthcare
professionals playing a central role in assessment and treatment planning.

The medical model has significant relevance within social work because
practitioners frequently work alongside healthcare professionals supporting
individuals with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, mental ill health and
long-term medical conditions. Understanding diagnoses, treatment options and
the effects of illness enables social workers to undertake informed assessments
and coordinate appropriate care. For example, knowledge of dementia,
