Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Perspective

Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Perspective is a developmental theory that explains
how individuals are influenced by the multiple environments in which they live.
Developed by psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner, the theory argues that human
development cannot be understood by examining the individual alone. Instead,
development results from continuous interactions between individuals and the
various social, cultural, economic and political systems that surround them. The
ecological perspective recognises that behaviour, wellbeing and life outcomes
are shaped by relationships and environmental influences operating at different
levels of society. Within social work, this perspective provides a holistic
framework for understanding how personal experiences are interconnected with
wider social contexts (Bronfenbrenner, 1979).

Bronfenbrenner developed the ecological perspective during the 1970s as a
response to developmental theories that focused primarily on individual
characteristics or immediate family relationships. He argued that these
approaches overlooked the influence of broader environmental factors such as
schools, communities, workplaces, public policy and cultural values. His theory
proposed that development is shaped through reciprocal interactions between
individuals and their environments, meaning that people both influence and are
influenced by the systems around them (Bronfenbrenner, 1979).

The ecological perspective consists of five interconnected systems. The
microsystem refers to the environments in which individuals have direct contact,
such as family, friends, school and work. The mesosystem describes the
relationships between these settings, for example the interaction between
parents and teachers or between health professionals and social workers. The
exosystem includes wider environments that indirectly affect individuals, such as
a parent's workplace, local services or neighbourhood resources. The
macrosystem represents the broader cultural, political and economic influences
that shape society, including legislation, social values and public attitudes.
Finally, the chronosystem acknowledges that individuals and environments
change over time through life events, historical developments and social change
(Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006).

The ecological perspective has significant relevance within social work because it
encourages practitioners to undertake holistic assessments that consider the
multiple factors influencing an individual's life. Rather than focusing solely on
