Biology is the study of living things. All organisms share key characteristics: they are organized into cells, use energy
(metabolism), maintain internal balance (homeostasis), grow and develop, respond to stimuli, reproduce, and evolve
over generations.
Levels of Organization
From smallest to largest: atoms → molecules → organelles → cells → tissues → organs → organ systems → organism
→ population → community → ecosystem → biosphere.
The Scientific Method
Observation → question → hypothesis (a testable, falsifiable explanation) → prediction → controlled experiment →
analysis → conclusion. A good experiment has an independent variable (what you change), a dependent variable
(what you measure), and controls to isolate the effect.
