ASSIGNMENT 4
DUE DATE: SEPTEMBER 2026

, HED4819 ASSIGNMENT 4 2026

DUE SEPTEMBER 2026

QUESTION 1

Sustainable agricultural practices can improve the lives of people and help rural
communities in South Africa to become stronger and more independent. These
practices include agroecology, climate-smart agriculture, crop rotation, crop
diversification, composting, soil conservation, integrated pest management and the
careful use of water and chemicals. They are important because many rural farmers
face problems such as drought, poor soil, water shortages, poverty and climate change.
Sustainable farming helps farmers use their natural resources carefully while still
producing food and earning an income.

Sustainable agriculture contributes directly to SDG 2: Zero Hunger because it helps
communities produce enough safe and nutritious food. Farmers who grow different
crops are less dependent on one crop and may have food available throughout the
year. For example, vegetables, legumes and drought-resistant crops can be grown
together. Sustainable methods such as mulching, composting and crop rotation can
also improve soil fertility and help farmers maintain production when rainfall is low.

Sustainable agriculture also supports SDG 1: No Poverty. Farming can provide food for
households and create opportunities to sell extra produce at local markets. Small
farmers can increase their income when they work together through cooperatives and
local value chains. Farming activities can also create jobs in areas such as food
processing, transport and selling agricultural products. This can help rural families
become less dependent on social grants or income from outside the community.

There are also links to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. Growing fresh food can
improve household nutrition, while reducing the unnecessary use of harmful chemicals
