the mitochondrion.
, STRUCTURE / FUNCTIONS OF THE MITOCHONDRIA:
double membrane - outer membrane is smooth, contains transport proteins for
moving pyruvate into the mitochondria. Freely permeable to small molecules like
O2. Inner membrane us folded into cristae - to provide a large SA for many ETC
proteins & ATP synthase enzymes
intermembrane space - allow for the creation of electro-chemical gradients (a
source of potential energy).
matrix - fluid of mitochondria, contains enzymes needed to catalyse reactions of link
reaction & Krebs cycle.
mitochondria DNA & 70s ribosomes - for synthesis of proteins (enzymes) needed for
Krebs cycle & ETC (cytochromes)
