Social attitudes and stereotypes play a significant role in creating barriers for people with
disabilities. While an individual's impairment may present certain functional limitations,
many of the challenges they experience arise because society holds negative beliefs and
misconceptions about disability. The social model of disability argues that disability is
largely created by environmental, social, and attitudinal barriers rather than by the
impairment itself (Oliver, 1996). As a result, discriminatory attitudes often prevent people
with disabilities from participating fully in education, employment, healthcare, and
community life.

One of the most common stereotypes is the belief that people with disabilities are less
capable, less productive, or overly dependent on others. These assumptions often lead
employers to overlook qualified candidates with disabilities despite their education,
experience, and skills. For example, an employer may assume that a wheelchair user
cannot effectively perform office or management duties, even though the job can be
completed with reasonable accommodation. Such stereotypes contribute to higher
unemployment levels among persons with disabilities and limit their financial independence
and career development (Shakespeare, 2018).

Negative social attitudes also contribute to social exclusion and isolation. Many people with
disabilities are excluded from community activities because others incorrectly assume they
cannot participate or would require too much assistance. This exclusion reduces
opportunities to develop friendships, participate in recreational activities, and become active
members of society. For example, a learner with a hearing impairment may be excluded
from classroom discussions if teachers do not provide sign language support or other
appropriate communication methods. Consequently, the learner's academic performance,
confidence, and social relationships may suffer (World Health Organization (WHO), 2022).

Another major challenge is the stigma attached to intellectual disabilities and psychosocial
disabilities. Individuals with these disabilities are often unfairly viewed as incapable of
