The circulatory system
[ vessels ]
Blood vessels :
- from network through body
- Allows for the transportation of blood , food , waste etc.
- 3 major types
Arteries :
- found deep in body tissue
- Found along or near a bone
- Have thick , muscular walls to help heart pump
blood
- inner layer is very smooth to help blood flow
easily
- Blood under high pressure = narrow diameter
lumen
- Have a pulse = moves blood along
- Carry blood away from heart
- Transports oxygenated [excluding pulmonary
artery - takes deoxygenated blood from heart to
lungs ] blood to the body
- Main artery leaving the heart = aorta
- Aorta divides into smaller arteries
Capillaries :
- found throughout the body
- Connect arteries to viens
- Walls are very thin
- Site of gaseous exchange
- Oxygen and food move into body cells
- Removes waste [ carbon dioxide ]
Veins :
- closer to surface of tissue
- Thin , elastic walls
- Collapse when empty
- Blood is under low pressure
- Semilunar values allow blood to move in one direction
- Carries blood towards the heart
- Main vein = vena cava
- Transports deoxygenated blood to lungs
[ excluding pulmonary vein - lungs to heart ]
