i) Eliciting the Target Language from the Context
(Referring to the sentences the students wrote on the board in the warmer.)
T: Let’s talk about what you all wrote on the board. Fayyaad, can you read me one of the sentences? It
doesn’t have to be your own.
Fayyaad: If I fall asleep in class, I will get in trouble.
T: Haha, very funny and true, for me as well as you. Class, let’s all repeat the sentence Fayyaad wrote. If I
fall asleep in class, I will get in trouble.
C: If I fall asleep in class, I will get in trouble.
T: Great. So this is sentence realistic or impossible? Is this something that could happen|
S1: Yes, could happen.
T: Right on. We call this kind of sentence the first conditional. The first conditional is for talking about
realistic and probable future events. Let’s apply this knowledge to the rest of the sentences on the
board. Amina, can you read me another sentence? Again, it doesn’t have to be the one that you wrote.
Amina: If I have wings, I will fly away.
T: Good. So this sentence, while funny, is this realistic or not?
S2: No.
T: Right. So because this is talking about something that’s not really realistic, this is not first conditional
form. This is actually called the second conditional, but we’ll be learning about that another day. Let’s
review what we know. What is the first conditional form used for? Aaliyah?
Aaliyah: Talking about future events?
T: Yep! You are all getting it!
ii) Eliciting the Form

T: If I don’t get paid, I won’t buy groceries. Repeat that, please.
C: If I don’t get paid, I won’t buy groceries.
T: Excellent! What form is this sentence in? Is it negative or affirmative? Fatima, can you tell me?
Fatima: Negative?
T: That’s right! Great job! Now who can tell me the sentence in the affirmative? Zara?
Zara: If I don’t get paid, I will buy groceries.
T: Close! Something else has to change. Do you want to try again?
Zara: If I get paid, I will buy groceries.
T: Fantastic! Now let’s try to say the sentence as a question. Does anyone want to try?
S1: If you get paid, will you buy groceries?

, T: Amazing! You got it. Now let’s repeat as a class all the forms. First, negative: If I don’t get paid, I won’t
buy groceries.
C: If I don’t get paid, I won’t buy groceries.
T: Excellent. Now let’s try the affirmative. If I get paid, I will buy groceries.
C: If I get paid, I will buy groceries.
T: Great! Now let’s repeat the interrogative form. If you get paid, will you buy groceries?
C: If you get paid, will you buy groceries?
T: Great work, everyone.
iii) Concept Checking
T: I want to make sure we are all on the same page. When we say sentences in the first conditional like
this, are we talking about the past, present, or future?
S1: Future.
T: That’s right! So does that mean that these events have happened already or not?
S2: No.
T: Right. And because we said that we’re talking about the future, that means these events… what?
S3: Will happen?
T: Perfect! Now, are the events we’re talking about realistic or imaginary?
S1: Imaginary.
T: Now, I can see why you’d think that because we are talking in the future, so these events haven’t
happened yet, but remember, the first conditional form covers events in the future that are probably
going to happen, as opposed to a fantasy situation like flying to space or meeting a dragon. Does that
help a bit?
S1: Yes.
T: Great. So now, when we use the first conditional, are we talking about events that are realistic or
imaginary or impossible?
S2: Realistic!
T: Great job! Let’s get the names right, too. Remember, the first conditional has two tenses in the
sentence. Let’s get the order right and remember what structure the first conditional follows. First we
start with the….?
S3: If.
T: Right, then we add….
S2: I?
T: Yes. I, or someone else, which we call the …?
S3: Subject!
T: Great work! So we have If plus Subject (writing on the board as we talk), after we have the…
S2: Present simple.
