Pakistan is a country in South Asia with four main cultural and language areas: Punjab,
Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It shares borders as well as cultures with
India, Afghanistan, and Iran. Therefore, Pakistan’s folk music is a rich blend of regional
influences. Since independence, cultural and religious traditions have influenced the use
of music, often limiting it to happy occasions. However, Sufi music, especially Qawwali,
holds a special place in the culture. Qawwali, with roots in South Asian Sufism, is considered
a powerful way of spiritual expression. It uses repetitive phrases to create a spiritual
atmosphere, and many of its lyrics are in Persian, reflecting its origins.
