TASK
Prepare ONE integrated professional reflective evaluation report in which you
address the following:
• Critically reflect on the communication practices demonstrated during the
meeting and explain how these practices either promoted or hindered inclusive
education.
• Analyse the communication cues (including symbols, gestures, facial expressions
and body language) used during the meeting and evaluate their effectiveness in
supporting meaningful participation.
• Recommend appropriate assistive technologies and communication tools that
could have improved communication among Musa, his family and the
professionals. Justify each recommendation.
On 29 July 2026 I attended a learner-support meeting at Cirro Full-Service Primary
School. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the educational progress of Musa, a
Grade 5 learner. Musa has cerebral palsy, limited speech and moderate hearing loss.
People present were the principal, class teacher, SBST coordinator, speech therapist,
occupational therapist and Musa’s mother. Musa was also in the room. The meeting
was meant to support Musa. Different professionals came together, and that is a good
start for inclusive education. However, several things in the meeting made it hard for
real inclusion to happen. The teacher used difficult professional words without
explaining them. No one spoke directly to Musa. The meeting was in English only, but
Musa’s mother mainly speaks isiXhosa. Communication tools like gestures and pictures
were used, but they were not accessible to everyone. The meeting ended with no clear
plan, no demonstration of assistive technology and no follow-up date. UNISA (2026)
explains in the INC4803 study guide that inclusive support is not only about identifying
barriers. It is also about creating practical ways for learners and families to take part. This
report reflects on three areas: communication practices, communication cues, and
assistive technology. I will link what happened in the meeting to theory and suggest
practical, evidence-based ways to make future meetings more inclusive.
