HED4812 ASSIGNMENT 3 2026

DUE AUGUST 2026

QUESTION 1: Moral Responsibility and Accountability in Leadership

Moral responsibility in leadership means that leaders must do what is right and fair.
They should make honest decisions and treat everyone with respect. Accountability
means that leaders must take responsibility for their actions. If they make a mistake or
do something wrong, they must accept the consequences. Leaders have influence over
other people, so they must use their power wisely and ethically. When leaders are
responsible and accountable, they build trust, encourage respect, and create a positive
environment where people feel valued and supported.

Importance of Ethical Behaviour in Leadership

Ethical behaviour is very important for leaders. When leaders act ethically, they set a
good example for everyone else. People look up to leaders and copy what they do. If a
leader is honest, employees will also be honest. If a leader cheats or lies, employees
may think it is okay to do the same. Ethical leaders also build trust. When people trust
their leader, they feel safe and are more willing to work hard. They do not waste time
worrying about being treated unfairly. Ethical behaviour also protects the organisation
from scandals and legal problems. Many companies have been destroyed because
leaders acted unethically. For example, Enron collapsed because its leaders lied about
money. This shows why ethical behaviour is not just nice to have - it is necessary for
survival. Research shows that ethical leadership is crucial for building trust, fostering a
positive organisational culture, motivating employees, and ensuring long-term success
(Alhaidan, 2024).

,Transparency in Leadership

Transparency means being open and honest. Leaders should not hide information from
their followers. They should explain why they make decisions and share important
news. When leaders are transparent, people can see what is happening. This builds
trust because no one feels like they are being kept in the dark. For example, a school
principal should tell teachers and parents about budget decisions. They should explain
why certain programmes are cut or expanded. Transparency also makes it harder for
leaders to do wrong things. When everything is out in the open, there is less room for
corruption. Leadership ethics fundamentally involves making decisions with a moral
compass and cultivating an environment of honesty (Leadership Ethics and Legal
Responsibility).

Integrity in Leadership

Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. A leader with
integrity does not cheat, lie, or take shortcuts. They keep their promises and act
according to their values. Integrity is important because it shows that a leader is
trustworthy. People know what to expect from them. A leader with integrity does not
change their principles just to get ahead. For example, a manager who refuses to give a
job to a friend just because they are a friend shows integrity. They choose the most
qualified person instead. Integrity also means admitting mistakes. A leader with integrity
does not blame others for their own failures. They take responsibility. Authentic
leadership is about integrity, accountability, and living your values in moments that
matter most (Repoll, 2026).

How Leaders Can Be Held Accountable

, Leaders can be held accountable in several ways. One way is through performance
reviews. Organisations can check if leaders are meeting their goals and following ethical
standards. Another way is through feedback from employees and followers. When
people can give honest feedback, leaders know how they are doing. They can learn
from their mistakes. Leaders can also be held accountable by laws and regulations. For
example, if a leader breaks the law, they can be fined or even go to prison. In schools,
principals are accountable to the school board and parents. If they do not do their job
well, they can be removed. A real example is when a company CEO is fired for
unethical behaviour, like cheating on financial reports. Leaders in senior positions hold
formal authority and accountability for organisational decision-making (Yukl, 2010, as
cited in Ethical Dilemmas and Paradoxical Tensions in Decision-Making, 2026).

Impact of Responsible Leadership on Organisations

Responsible leadership has a big impact on organisations. First, it creates a positive
culture. People feel valued and respected. They are happier at work and more
productive. Second, responsible leadership reduces risk. When leaders act ethically,
they are less likely to cause scandals that damage the organisation's reputation. Third,
responsible leadership attracts good people. People want to work for organisations with
good leaders. They want to be proud of where they work. Fourth, responsible leadership
leads to long-term success. Organisations that are run ethically tend to last longer than
those that are not. They build strong relationships with customers, employees, and the
community. Ethical leaders not only make morally sound decisions themselves but also
create an environment that encourages ethical behaviour among employees and
stakeholders (The Impact of Ethical Leadership on Corporate Governance, 2025).

Moral responsibility and accountability are essential for good leadership. Leaders must
act ethically and be willing to answer for their actions. Principles like transparency and
integrity help leaders stay on the right track. When leaders are accountable, they build
trust and create positive organisations. Responsible leadership leads to better
