Introduction:
This assessment is all about the definition of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
which is a protocol that manages a network device and helps to manage, update, configure,
monitor devices centrally. It is very complicated to manage a network manually if there is a
large volume of network. So, SNMP protocol helps to solve this problem easily.
In this project, I have built a network in a packet tracer using three routers, three pcs and
three switches. After that IP address configuration is done and SNMP management program
was installed in order to configure SNMP agents and manager. Here, SNMP manager being a
application program contacts the agents. SNMP Agents are servers which runs on a piece of
network equipment. All the information like port number, system information, PDU,
interfaces are found in Management Information Base (MIB). MIB is a small text file that
describes a device which is managed by SNMP.
This report includes all the screenshots of a packet tracer file which clearly shows all the
findings and results. It also states SNMP, Organisational, Communication Model, Managing
Entities. It has also been stated all the details of objects that we have managed here.
Assumption:
Below given is the screenshot of a network topology that I have created for this project using
the guideline provided in the VU Collaborate. This network topology has 5 networks as
shown below.

In the above given network, we have assumed the following:
PC-PT T150 is assumed to be SNMP Manager
Switches and Routers are assumed to be SNMP Agents
Routers have read only privileges
Switches have read and write privileges.

, COMPUTER NETWORKS TECHMICAL PROJECT 2026
SNMP is one of the widely used protocol which was created to monitor and manage a
network easily. This protocol allows to exchange the management information among the
network devices.
In this project, there is 1 SNMP Manager and the other devices are considered to be SNMP
Agents. Here, we have six agents in total which are three routers and three switches.
Organisational Model is a type of SNMP Model which has relationship between network
element, agent, and manager. Manager primarily sends requests to agents. It also helps in
monitoring the interfaces, alarms, application for information. The Agent usually responds to
the request of a manager. Agents also gather information from the object. It also helps in
configuring parameters. MIB keeps the record of information of all the network elements
that are managed over a network.
Types of organisational model are:
Two-Tier Organisation Model,
Three Tier Organisation Model
Communication Model
SNMP Plays a vital role in communication between manager and agents. Agents usually
deals with messages that is sent by a manager. During this process of communication, there
are three aspects that plays an important role:
Message Format: The messages are encrypted and compressed into frames which is passed
to application layer.
Transport Medium: Transport medium of Message is User Diagram Protocol (UDP) which
uses port 161 and 162 to request and trap message.
Actual Message: Actual messages are the commands which responds between
communication of entities.
SNMP Managing Entities:
SNMP Managing Entities has components like Managing Entity which is a PC, Managed
entity i.e. switches and routers and network management protocol. These managing entity
are usually applications running in a centralised NMS. Some of the functions of these entities
are information collection, information display, supporting admin to interact with
networking device, processing and analysis.
