Apidra - ANS-Insulin Glulisine
Insulin - Rapid Acting
Type 1 and Type 2, short duration
may be given with longer performing insulin
given within 15 minutes or within 20 min of ingesting a meal
Route: Subq or IV pump
Can be blended with NPH (intermediate insulin)
Store in fridge for 28 days
Drawing up Insulin - ANS-1) test the vial of insulin against document orders
2) test expiration date on bottle
three) *lightly roll vial for cloudy insulin*
four) *take a look at the dimension on the syringe*
five) inject identical quantity of air to insulin ordered
*eg: 1 unit of insulin/ 1 unit of air*
6) Draw out order devices of insulin and faucet out any air.
Inhaled insulin - ANS-Exubera
Rapid-appearing, dry powder inhaled through mouth into lungs
*Contraindications*
Not recommended for patients with bronchial asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema
Onset: 10 to 30 min
Peak: inside 2 hrs
Duration: for six hrs
Insulin orders - ANS-Now order (emergency order)
, Standing order (before meals and AM doses)
Sliding Scale order (additional insurance after blood glucose is checked)
Insulin Syringes - ANS-Insulin is measured in Units NOT cc's
Insulin syringes are every now and then referred to as U-a hundred syringes because they're all
insulin doses
*MUST BE MEASURED IN UNITS*
Also check the syringe calibration some have 1 line = 1 unit
1 line= 2 devices
Long acting insulin - ANS-1) glargine (Lantus) period of movement 20 to 26 hrs

Peak: 6 hrs to twenty hrs
Basal Dose over 24 hours (low dose)

Mixing Insulin - ANS-Frequently 2 types of insulin are mixed in one syringe, this is because the
pt needs each and simplest one injection is given
*All insulin EXCEPT LANTUS AND LEVEMIR CAN BE MIXED, NEVER MIX THESE 2

there is NOT a standing or sliding scale order
the LPN/RN MUST call the medical doctor with a excessive blood sugar and the document then
supply they sort of order to cover the blood sugar
