Ch. 6 Developing Information Literacy Skills; Internet The internet can cause bad study habits, i.e. not thinking for yourself (thinking
deeply enough about anything or critically thinking)
Motivation Being organized and staying motivated can help develop your information
literacy skills and sharpen your personal thinking and critical thinking skills.
, Communicate Communicate your needs to professors and/or other people necessary. Stay in
touch with other students in the course(s) - this can be study groups or discussion
board forums asking for help/advice. Stay on top of emails with professors and
classmates.
Laptop Keep antivirus up to date. Keep laptop updated and free of excess files. Make
sure to have folders for important files.
Productivity Create a productive learning environment. Use each session as an opportunity to
further review your knowledge and information literacy. Utilize time management
skills and have a tech backup plan if your laptop fails you.
Information Literacy This begins with curiosity/inquiry of what you already know to learn what you
want to know (more); Ability to find information from appropriate sources,
evaluate the information, organize it, and use it to achieve a goal (ex. get a high
mark on a quiz or test); continuous cycle of research & reflection.
Data Collection of raw facts and/or figures
Information Data that has context and signification
Data, Information, Knowledge Master students have the ability to process data and information to a higher level
of knowledge; this information leads to new decisions and behaviours.
Information literacy Not just useful for doing research for papers and presentations but is useful for
research in all areas of a master student's life.
Steps for Information -Define topic
-Ask questions about the topic
-Choose a system for notetaking (i.e. flash cards, laptop, Cornell method, or 3-
column with summary)
-Avoid academic misconduct: plagiarism, fraud, cheating, hiring another to do
your work, etc.
Confidence & Information Literacy Become more comfortable and confident about researching & writing:
-determine the assignment
-find materials
-choose your sources
-organize your research (create topical categories such as compare/contrast,
problems and possible solutions)
-evaluate, use, and cite sources accurately
