, Introduction:
As I’ve moved further into my role in the research and development lab, my supervisor has decided that I’m
ready to take responsibility for my own project, which feels like an important step in developing my confidence
and independence as a trainee researcher. After discussing possible directions with my supervisor and reflecting
on my own interests in the sciences, I conducted a detailed literature review to help shape a clear investigative
proposal and a structured plan. Now that my proposal has been approved, I’m progressing to the practical stage
where I will carry out the investigation I designed, record and analyse my results, and then reflect on the
strengths and limitations of my project. This process is giving me the chance to apply what I’ve learned, make
decisions for myself, and evaluate my work in a realistic research setting.

out the project using safe working practices.
Safety rules and precautions I followed
Throughout the practical, I made sure to follow strict safety rules to protect myself and others in the lab. I wore
gloves when handling the pondweed, beakers and test tubes to avoid contamination and reduce the risk of cuts
from the glass equipment. Because I was working with water and an electrical lamp at the same time, I was
especially careful to keep all liquids away from the power sockets and cables, as shown in my setup. I positioned
the lamp securely so it wouldn’t overheat or fall
into the beaker, and I made sure the wires were
not trailing across the workspace where they
could be pulled or tripped over. I handled the
glassware gently to prevent breakages, and I
placed everything on a flat, stable surface to
avoid spills. I also kept my workspace tidy by
clearing away unnecessary items so I had
enough room to work safely and reduce the
chance of accidents. These precautions helped
create a safe working environment and ensured
that the experiment could be carried out
without any risks to myself or the
equipment.[1]
