Aim B: Understand the impact of disorder on the physiology of the lymphatic system and the associated
corrective treatment.

, Introduction:
As part of my college course, I completed a one-month work placement with a national charity that works
closely with scientific and medical research organisations. This placement allowed me to observe specialist
laboratory work, practise a range of scientific techniques, and gain first-hand insight into medical research
focused on the lymphatic system. Throughout the placement, I developed a clearer understanding of the
structure and normal function of the lymphatic system, as well as how disorders can impair its function and
affect overall health.


This portfolio presents a patient case study that reflects the knowledge and understanding I gained during the
programme. It explores the normal functioning of the lymphatic system, the impact of lymphatic diseases on the
body, and the treatments used to manage and correct these conditions. Scientific terminology is used
throughout to demonstrate my understanding and to present the information professionally and accurately.

Spleen
●​ Location of the spleen
The spleen is found in the upper left side of the abdomen. It sits just
underneath the diaphragm and is protected by the lower left ribs. The spleen
lies behind the stomach and in front of the left kidney, which helps keep it
fairly well protected during normal activities. In adults, it is roughly the size
of an avocado. Because of its position near the rib cage, a strong blow to the
left side of the body, such as during a car accident or contact sport, can
damage the spleen and cause it to rupture, which is a serious medical
emergency.[1]
●​ Composition of the spleen
The spleen is composed of two main types of tissue, known as red pulp and white pulp, each with
distinct roles. The white pulp is involved in the body’s immune response. It contains large numbers of
white blood cells, particularly lymphocytes. These cells are responsible for producing antibodies and
identifying harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, that enter the bloodstream.


The red pulp makes up most of the spleen and is mainly involved in filtering the blood. It removes old
or damaged red blood cells and recycles useful components like iron. The red pulp also helps to destroy
pathogens and acts as a reservoir for blood, releasing it into circulation when needed. Together, these
two tissues allow the spleen to play an important role in both immunity and red blood cell production,
linking the circulatory and immune systems.[1]
