How accurate is it to say that the education system was improved
dramatically between 1918-43 and how far do you agree that education
provision failed to progress during the interwar years

1. Fisher act 1918
Raised the school leaving age to 14 and created contributory schools for
those over the age to continue their studies one day a week
It also abolished elementary fees and wanted the creation of nursery
schools
However little nursery schools were acc created as education spending
was cut by 1/3 due to geddes axe cut of 1922
2. Hadow report of 1926
Suggested school leaving age be raised to 15
Dividing secondar education into modern and technical
Replace elementary school with primary school
A later 1938 report suggested the triparted system and free education
In 1938 only 45 of those attended free schools
3. Also took about the creation of grammar schools from the 1918
act- often called central schools and often operated by local
authorities, they did charge fees but brighter children were
occasionally awarded scholarships- even with scholarships if the
child stayed on past 14 they someone how needed to make up for
the extra money the child was not making


How accurate is it to say that the Crossland circular was the most
important development in the years 1945-79

1. Crossland circular- devised by Anthony Crossland and it stated
that all secondary education should be comprehensive and non
fee payin- 1964 only 10%-1979 90%
In 1966- gov stated that LEA that did not adopt comprehensive reforms
would not be given funding
