Unit 12: Diseases and Infection
Assignment 12D: Understand how the Human body response to diseases and infections
human body responds to diseases and
Diseases and infections that arise in the body are fought off
infections by the immune system: the body’s defence system.

The immune system is comprised of two sub-divisions, the
non-specific immune system, and the specific immune
system. Both these systems work to defend the body
against diseases and infections.

In this assignment, the mechanism of action for these
immune systems will be explained in terms of how and why
they work to defend the body. In addition to this, responses
involved in the specific immune system will be compared
and evaluated, looking at their roles and the speed and
specificity of their response. Specific named examples of
diseases and infections will be used in this evaluation to
identify how the immune system defends the body.

Non-specific

The first line of defence is the
non-specific immune system (see
Figure 1), and these defences
include physical, chemical
barriers and phagocytosis. They
are non-specific as they do not
fight certain types of pathogens
and are general (1).
