This comprehensive guide is designed for teacher candidates completing TFE 800.31 Interactive Field Experiences in The Learning Environment: Part 1. This field experience requires 5 hours of active engagement in a TEA-approved classroom, where candidates observe and participate in instructional activities rather than passive observation. The reflection assignment builds on prerequisite courses including Developing a Respectful Learning Environment, Theories of Classroom Management, and Techniques of Classroom Management. Candidates analyze four classroom management styles (Authoritative, Behavior, Instructional, and Social-Emotional) exhibited by mentor teachers, identify effective strategies for preventing behavioral disruptions, examine teacher expectations and how they are maintained, and document specific active engagement activities across all five classroom hours. The Texas Administrative Code requires that 100% of field-based experience time involves active engagement with students during instructional activities such as facilitating small groups, assisting with classroom management, reading aloud, answering student questions, and one-on-one tutoring. This guide includes the complete reflection questions, sample responses from actual candidates, and guidance on documenting active engagement across multiple days and classrooms.

TFE 800.31 Interactive Field Experiences in The Learning Environment: Part 1

For many new teachers, classroom management is a significant concern as they take on their own
classroom. If the classroom lacks structure and students don’t feel understood, teaching content
becomes very difficult. A well-organized classroom, however, built on a culture of mutual respect and
rigorous expectations creates an environment where students and teachers can thrive. This field
experience builds on courses such as Developing a Respectful Learning Environment, Theories of
Classroom Management, and Techniques of Classroom Management. As you spend time observing and
participating in class during this field experience, pay attention to ways the teacher(s) establish rules and
procedures, manage learning time, and apply design strategies for effective classroom management.

IMPORTANT: This field experience requires 5 hours in the classroom. The Texas Administrative Code
requires FBEs include your active engagement with students during educational activities the entire time
you are in the classroom. Please make sure to discuss with the teacher beforehand ways for you to be
actively involved, such as but not limited to facilitating small groups, help with monitoring the class, one-
on-one tutoring during class time, answering student questions, and other activities more involved than
observation or small talk.

Please download these reflection questions before you visit a school and use them to guide your
notetaking and observations. After you have completed and verified five clock hours of classroom time at
a TEA approved school, please complete this reflection fully and completely. Your 5 hours of classroom
time requires one reflection. If you visited multiple teachers or multiple classes during your five hours,
your single reflection should reference all the teachers and classes.

Once completed, please upload this reflection to the Learner Development Reflection Submission page
in TFE 800.31

Reflection Questions:

1. In Theories of Classroom Management, you learned about four different management styles:
Authoritative, Behavior, Instructional, and Social-Emotional. What management style did you see
the different teachers exhibit? Note the specific style and describe in at least two sentences the
evidence you saw that brought you to that conclusion. How effective were these styles and why?
Mr. Dugger demonstrated an authoritative management style, combining clear expectations
with warmth and support. At the beginning of class, he reviewed behavior norms and explained
the purpose of the summative review activities, ensuring students understood both the
structure and academic expectations. He used positive reinforcement throughout the class and
responded to student errors with encouragement and redirection rather than criticism. This style
was effective because it promoted student engagement and minimized behavioral issues. The
students remained respectful, on-task, and actively involved in their learning throughout the
review.
